Oxford Lent Concerts, 2024

Two free concerts of early and modern music and modern art for lent.

All concerts are in Queen's College Chapel, Oxford. Also see Queen's college page about the concerts.

Admission to the Chapel 15 minutes before each concert.

Each concert will last approximately 40 minutes.

Concerts are FREE with a Retiring Collection for the United Nations Children's Fund and the MS Society.


Concert 1, March 12 (Tuesday) 6:15 - 7pm

Matthew Locke (c. 1621-1677): How doth the city sit solitary

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704): Sonata VI of the Rosary Sonatas - Christ on the Mount of Olives.

Gregorio Allegri (c. 1582-1652): Miserere mei, Deus.

Dietrich Buxtehude (c. 1637-1707): Passacaglia in D minor (BuxWV 161)

John Blow (1649-1708): Salvator mundi, salva nos.

Ernest Bloch (1880-1959): Prayer, from Jewish Life, No. 1.

The audience is requested to remain silent between pieces and for a period following the final piece, Prayer by Ernest Bloch.

Afterwards, all are warmly invited to speak with the artists, who will stand alongside the paintings.

Thomas Adès (b. 1971): Arcardiana (1994) 6. - O Albion

Pergolesi (1710-1736): Stabat Mater (1736) with choral additions by Benjamin Cooke (1734-1793)
